4 voices - 40 Towns, 4,000 Connections, and a Powerful Awakening

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who engaged, commented, liked, shared, volunteered, or donated to our #40towns40K campaign! This journey was more transformative than we ever imagined.

We embarked on a mission: connect with 4,000 people in 40 towns, raising $40,000 for the vulnerable women we support.
However, upon entering the first town, we knew our vision needed to evolve.

We came to spread kindness and connections but encountered countless heartbreaking stories.  The underfunding, lack of police presence, and invisibility of struggles in some towns became starkly apparent.

We hit the streets and we sought out those whose voices needed amplification.

We met thousands from all walks of life: some in denial of local challenges, others heroically tackling them through their own initiatives.

The issues are vast and intricate, beyond the scope of any single organisation.

We're now working tirelessly with the incredible organisations and townspeople we encountered. Together, we'll strategise and collaborate for positive change.

And we are starting on the Gold Coast.

More than 6,500 women sought help for domestic violence issues on the Gold Coast in 2023; that is about 18 women each day asking for help! (The number of offences would be much higher because so many cases of domestic violence go unreported and/or people are not seeking help).

Domestic violence is a significant contributor to homelessness, and on the Gold Coast, women are more likely to have unstable accommodation due to this problem.

Homelessness is rising due to a shortage of affordable and private rental housing. Housing affordability stress, cost of living increases and unemployment are all factors leading to domestic violence.

Now, we need more. More volunteers, wider reach, and amplified voices to spread this message:

A pandemic of injustice is unfolding. We can't stay blind to what is plaguing our towns.  We need your help to transform Australia. Let’s open our eyes, open our hearts. We can do better. Together.

On our "40 Towns, 4000 Connections" journey, the harsh realities faced by women in southeast Queensland, through to NSW, struck a deep chord. Every town brought harrowing stories of abuse, homelessness, addiction, trauma, and extreme loneliness. Some women were ostracized for health issues, leaving or not leaving an abusive partner,  mental health problems or addiction.

Children suffered circumstances no child should endure. We encountered a terrified six-year-old who fled home, fearing everyone, even us, as he used a payphone to plead for help. Countless others recounted desperate calls to the police due to domestic violence, disappointed by the wait times as response units struggle to keep up with demand.

In the face of such hardship, we offered what we could: a listening ear, a connection, and the reassurance of their worth and safety. This video is dedicated to Debbie, a woman battling mental health issues, addiction, serious infections, and homelessness. When we met Debbie, she was using toothpaste to reduce swelling and bruising from a recent assault, hoping to appear presentable for a housing interview the following day.

Debbie's story etched sorrow in our hearts, but also fuelled our strength to keep fighting for change and connection in our communities.

"It really does take a village ." Help 4 Voices keep building a village where every vulnerable woman and child is safe.

For Debbie - Tribute

In the 4 years since 4 Voices started, we have helped over 4000 girls and women who have experienced isolation due to domestic violence, homelessness or loneliness. Commencing 9 March 2024 (the day after International Women’s Day) we started our road trip with two teams journeying through 40 townships between Brisbane and Sydney.

The event celebrated connection as a powerful antidote for isolation, inviting women to connect and join our network of support, so that others who may feel unsafe or alone are aware that there is a community out there that cares. 4000 connections invited either online or in person at the townships along the way. It’s not too late to join.

Amy*

It’s really tricky to get onto the NDIS and it’s particularly hard if you don’t have friends or family to help you with completing the application and securing the relevant support documentation.

We helped Amy through this process. Amy has a disability and lives alone.

We found out last week that she has been accepted into the NDIS. The benefits she will receive will change her life.

Tahlia*

We take Aurora to a number of crisis accommodation centres. We met Tahlia, a lovely mother of three kids under 3. The eldest was born 15 weeks premature and has had surgery after surgery, and with a compromised immune system, is always battling illness.

Tahlia has recently fled an abusive man after years of trying to make it work. She takes life all in her stride, the four of them all living now in a cramped space, trying to rebuild.

Holly*

Holly is a New Zealander who lost her job during COVID19.

As a Kiwi she was not entitled to any unemployment benefits – she was facing homelessness as jobs were not easy to obtain. She has an infectious personality and a great sense of humour – she also has a car!

We helped her register herself as an Uber driver, allowing her to work her own hours to manage the demands of her household and teenage boys.
